Month 3: March 2024

  1. Week 9: Meet the Team

    • Introduce key members of your team, showcasing the talent behind "W is for Web."

Name, Position, years at w is for web, what does a good day look like, and what's the worst day like? And your favorite -

    A) Sandra, Website & animation designer, founder since 2013ish. A good day is working on multiple tasks, one at a time, and each task having a positive effect on my outlook as about half of those tasks are related to self-care. The worst days are when I cannot work, I'm in pain for some reason, and my mood (good or bad) is threatening to hijack my week or month, and when I was younger, they felt like years.  My favorite things to do are usually spontaneous. I like to give myself a lot of breaks (such as with drawing, my cats, or my games) not only to relieve boredom but because it helps me calm down especially if there is a deadline or pressure to do the job right and I'm not sure what I'm doing.  My super power is I can be overly creative and turn out some relatively amazing work in a short amount of time.  That's why I tend to work best with well-conceived deadlines.

     B) Sophie, CEO, (Cat Executive Officer) Cat in therapy and therapy cat, with me since about 2009 or so. Sophie is my older of two cats, and these days she has radioactive excretions because of a radio-iodine treatment for her hyperthyroid symptoms. I am wondering if she's really getting better, and hoping that we don't have to redo anything or that there isn't another complication.  I have a story board brewing in my head about her becoming a super-pussy because of radioactivity, where she can make biscuits faster than any other baker when she's not fighting evil chickens.  A good day for super-pussy would be making 100 biscuits per minute, and using her dark stare downs at Chicken to keep her out of her territory.  A bad day for Sophie in reality is losing more than half her body weight to hyperthyroidism, throwing up a lot, and sometimes not being continent in the right places.  Come to think of it, that last symptom is part of a really bad day for me, too.  Her favorite things are sitting on the shark tank bean bag that doubles as a bed and asking Edwin to join her out on the Lanai, where she can be truly herself, Sophie Lai on the Lanai.

     C) Chicken, CFO, (Cat Financial Officer) with me since around 2022 or so. Chicken and Sophie love to squabble over details like what needs to be done first, (treats, string, or biscuits?) And she is my CFO because she has an angel (MW) who is supporting us with her food.  She was shy at first, but warmed up quickly to just about any kind of treat you want to give her. But if you are regular with those treats, she will demand them on the regular.  That's also what makes her a good CFO and a good motivator. Chicken's super power (invisibility) is that she is so afraid of everything and everyone that she will hide so well that no one even knows she is there.  She is actually quite friendly on a good day, and allows you to pet her and realize that not only is she a very sturdy and handsome kitty, but she has a few very difficult to untangle hard mattes in her fur.  Chicken's favorite string is a magic one.

    D) Edwin, art director and pro-bono consultant, with me since about 2014 or so. When I have questions about illustrator or technical things with art, he's the guy I ask, and luckily he doesn't charge me for it. He's also better with Chicken than I am, and he was the one who realized Chicken loves red ribbons.  I've been very lucky to have him as part of my little team.  His super power is he is a fabulous baker, and gets very creative with food on a regular basis.  Sophie is the cat who will often sample his creations, and I'm usually the lucky person who eats most of it.  A bad day for him is often not knowing how long work will be for the day, with zoom work meetings at odd times, through lunch, and unexpectedly as well. A good day for him is a weekend when he bowls over 200 in game, or when he is able to see other friends that he hasn't seen in a while, sometimes at the magic castle.    Ed's favorite thing is hanging out with his "special boys" and writing what they say when there is a moment of great importance to be recorded for "the book".

    E) You, someone I've met or not yet, but hopefully will meet someday. You are smart enough to know whether or not a website is appropriate for you. You read the fine print, and are willing to learn what things mean. You might want something that I can not offer yet but are willing to wait and see if I am able to do it as quickly as you need, as you know that I'm willing to learn as well.  You are someone that may want to direct me creatively or technically, as you see fit. You may also be someone who is willing to learn something from me and are willing to put in the time to learn when it fits your goals.  Or is as usually the case, you may not have time to learn anything from me and would rather that I do the work with your approval.  You are part of my team.  The fact that you're reading this right now shows you are someone willing to commit yourself to learning more about me. I appreciate your unique individual talent, personality, and effort to help out, including the act of listening by reading.  Thank you for being part of W is for Web and its mission to support people with websites, digital literacy, mental health advocacy, and animation.
