I was reading this article about the different conversion software and I am in disagreement about some of their choices.
1) I love Adobe Express, but their SVG converter left much to be desired.
This is my image and what happened when I tried to get it to convert from Adobe Express with transparency.
My idea is simply to get the smallest file size I can for all my websites, with transparency when possible, and I'm starting to wonder if I can find a svg converter that will do that. I might be able to create this particular logo as an svg because I think it did start as an illustrator file. But this post is basically me researching actual programs that will do the conversion for me.
The second site (OnlineConvertFree) did the transparency job! However it was not able to keep the file size down enough for my needs. While it was smaller than Adobe's image, it was still 121 kb, which is about 30 kb larger than my original png.
The third site Convertio did an excellent job with transparency and minimizing, but it went a little too far and removed a lot of my logo. It's only 12 kb. Wow. Honestly if this is the best one, I'll feel a little bad but change is good. Less is more.
Vector Magic had more customization options, but then it also tried to upsell me with the desktop version to get the results I needed. In fact, it would not allow me to export any file at all even as a trial without first signing up. So I have very little to go on here unless I'm willing to invest. Moving on.
Most of the other recommended apps were downloads, but I happen to already have libreoffice installed, so I tried the conversion process in there. Not a great advantage unless you're starting with something that's already optimized for svgs.
So I'm thinking my best option at this point really is to go back to illustrator with the original file and export it as an svg. Had I known it was a thing when I first made the logo, I would have done that already.
I'm also realizing that webp, although it is a great option for websites, is too much trouble at this point to figure out how to program into my websites. I know for wordpress there are plugins that automatically convert all your images to webp somehow, but right now all my sites are hosted on carrd, which makes this not a perfect solution for right now. Okay, so back to the drawing board with web ideas.
Finally I'm looking for minify solutions for my sites since all of them have poor text to code and image to text ratios. I'll leave that for a future article when I have more concrete solutions.
